I've been watching westerns since I was a small girl. It started out in my grandfather's lap and moved to my daddy's. My fondest memories of both of them were situated on a couch curled up on their chest asking daddy or Papaw what each rider was doing or which cowboy was the good guy. That passion for the wild west has stayed with me making it one of my favorite genres in romance. I love being transported to the time where the wild west thrived.

Kristine Raymond takes you to a small town in Hidden Springs where you meet Kate, a young woman with a troubling past. The day Kate comes rolling into town, Sam is immediately smitten but catching Kate's eye proves harder than he expected. Kate is hiding a secret, a secret she realizes may halt her one chance on love. Can she let it go and move on? This is where you have to read and find out!

Grammatically correct and well written, Kristine Raymond delivers a love story amidst a small western town. Is it all fun and games? No. Life in the west is often unfair and hard. Death, rape, and all around struggles were a constant worry. Being a man in the west can be hard, but sometimes being a woman can prove even tougher. In the case of this book, this was no exception. I'm one of those types that melts at the aspect of the hero saving the damsel in distress at the last minute. Reality tells me that that's not how life actually works and that was the only part that I had to get past and come to terms with. In the real world, happily ever after has to be worked at. Kudos to Kristine Raymond for showing that. And of course for those younger audiences, this is a book for the older generation. The steamy scenes will leave you sweating.

3.5 stars for me. While I actually enjoyed the plot line and the main characters, it did feel like the author wrote a modern story and set it into the old west time period. Kate is independent, runs her own ranch and has sworn off men. Sam sees her and is almost instantly in love. He sets out to get closer to her, but Kate had something traumatic in her past and doesn't want a relationship.
So there is mostly modern language in this story. For example "Let's keep our relationship professional." I can't believe a woman in the 1860s would actually say that to a man. There were some mildly steamy scenes that were enjoyable.
I can't give this four stars, but I did finish the book and I didn't hate it.
Author Kristine Raymond has unearthed a gem of a series with her debut novel, Here to Stay. It is book one in her series, Hidden Springs. This western romance weaves its way into your heart, leaving you with a craving for more. You will enjoy getting to know these well-developed characters as they make their way through life in the old west. Where building a life on a ranch, in a small western town was the golden dream. It is like sitting at the dinner table drinking coffee with Kate, Sam, Jack, Daniel, Carly, and Rusty...chatting and getting to know them.

The author paints a beautiful vision for her readers of a realistic old west. Small town, Hidden Springs, where everyone knows everyone and helps each other survive through the revitalization of the town. Everyone is on horseback, men spend their free time in the saloon, having a beer or whiskey with friends, and women had their place in society to be ladies. However, Kate breaks the mold on that societal view of women. Kate is independent and when she resigns to the fact that she needs to hire help to put fencing up around her ranch, she has no problems finding the help she needs.

Kate is young, beautiful, ambitious, strong willed, and ready to see her dreams of owning and running her own ranch come true. Kate is also closed off and private about her personal life due to surviving a horrific tragedy. The closest thing she has to family are Daniel and Carly. Daniel and Carly were in Hidden Springs by a run of bad luck that actually worked out to be good for everyone. Kate offered Daniel and Carly jobs on her ranch and gave them the second house on her property along with some acreage; they were more than thrilled. The three of them together, were an instant family. Kate struggles with a broken heart and a worried mind, all alone; will she ever find it in herself to open her heart again?

Sam is young, handsome, hardworking, and is in need of family and togetherness as much as Kate, whether either of them will admit to it or not. Sam unknowingly, will have a devastating secret revealed to him...will he be able to cope and continue to have a strong heart that is open to love? Sam and Kate's immediate attraction and quick development of feelings for one another, creates intense love scenes that are unforgettable and definitely leave you wanting more!

It may be 2013, but the author pulls you into 1867 with gifted visuals, adding warmth, love, and drama. You will love the details of this story. Here to Stay, is beautifully crafted and should easily meet the requirements necessary to make its readers fall in love. The storyline is smooth and well thought out. You will glide through the development of relationships and understand the burdens and issues of the hearts involved. This romance series will keep you anxiously waiting for the next book. Out of all of the romantic series' I have read, this one climbed right to the top with its steamy love scenes, handsome cowboy heroes, beautiful and tough heroines...all wrapped up in a beautiful cover!!
Historical novels with strong female leading characters are compelling to me, so I thought I'd give this one a chance. The book started out well. A woman with a mystery in her past makes friends in a new town, starts a business and begins to have feelings for one of her employees. Then things went downhill.
I don't care for graphic sex scenes in the novels I read, and there were several here, but I could have forgiven them if they had been congruent with the characters. However, the scenes in this book were not.
MAJOR SPOILER ALERT when a character has endured rape, and then her first encounter with her former fiancé is incredibly rough sex, followed by him storming off, this is not only out of character, but is downright abusive and sickening. (Especially if she still moons about him and wonders if he will ever love her....sick) I started the book with a great sense of expectation and finished it with nausea and loathing. Skip this one unless the above scenario appeals to you.
