The Dundee Law Burns! Mystery Book 2 edition by Erin O'Quinn Romance eBooks

I am a relative newcomer to M/M romance and to Erin O'Quinn as an author, but I have quickly become a fan - to the point that I'd like to take a week off from everything else and do nothing but catch up on the books I've missed. Fortunately, I got in on the "ground floor" with her newest series, the Fitzgerald-Burns Mystery novellas, and as soon as I read the first one, I found myself wanting the next. Now that I've read book #2, I am even more anxious for #3. What's the attraction? This series is like a gourmet meal served in tapas portions: each novella is the reader's equivalent of a palate teaser, delivered and savored in small amounts, and always leaving you eager for the next course. In this case, the 'next course' is also the next layer in the evolving story of these two captivatingly complex, stunningly sexy, über-masculine, deeply passionate characters.

We first meet Thomas Fitzgerald, police detective, and Robert "Robbie" Burns (descendent of the poet, and a respected Scottish historian) in Burns Too Deep, as strangers brought together along a highway in Scotland. It's obvious from the beginning that they each have deeply held secrets, but they also share an immediate, powerful attraction - a burning ember that erupts into a firestorm of undeniable need, desperation, and lust. They develop a reluctant trust - strangers bonded by an attraction that is as fierce as it is difficult to understand. We learn a few secrets - things that could bring them together or drive them apart - but are left wondering what, if anything, will come of their brief but complicated relationship.

In The Dundee Law, they are initially brought back together by a driving need for each other, but are then drawn into a murder mystery that will take both of them to solve: Burns as a scholar and Fitzgerald as a detective. The theme of power exchange - sexually and as a crime-solving team - is prominent and truly engaging, with a mix of humor, tenderness and enough steam to power a small city. As you might expect, the story is not without conflict, both internal and external. Differences emerge that could bring them together or drive them apart. Their relationship is new, tentative, full of secrets. In this phase of their romantic journey they are testing each other, learning to trust, taking risks - trying to let go and allow themselves the pleasure they so urgently need and deserve. Navigating a partnership - be it intimate, work-related or both - won't be a walk in the park for either man.

You can't help but feel the struggle within and between the two, and hope they recognize that they are not only made for each other, but are made for the mission they find themselves involved in. It is an emotional, suspenseful, deeply touching story with just enough tension at the end to leave you anticipating the next course in this well-paced, gourmet literary meal. If you love characters that are beautifully complex, sensual, powerful and a little bit dark - this is the series for you.

The Dundee Law Burns! Mystery Book 2 edition by Erin O'Quinn Romance eBooks Reviews

What's not to like here? Great narrative, real dialogue, suspense--the whole package. Ms. O'Quinn writes the Scottish dialogue in such a way that will definitely make you read it in dialect (think Braveheart <3) I'm not going to reveal any plot points here, because I believe that should be something for each reader to unwrap on their own, but--Thomas and Burns? Two beautiful men, larger than life, loving each other? Yes please--may we keep hearing them play each others' harps for some time to come ) Ah, and the scene with the rose? Perfect.
Erin O’Quinn has done it again. A WONDERFUL novella that has woven the beautiful Scottish past with clever and deep characters. A master weaver to blend the heartfelt colors of these diverse clans and to intersperse poignant history in the weave. Burns is a rich and beautiful character who exudes strength and wisdom and Fitzgerald is a bird whose wings have just mended and is now ready to fly. These two, together help this fast paced novella reach wonderful heights. Get this book and enjoy this master story-teller’s great art. You’ll be so glad you did.
I have read many of Eric O’Quinn’s books. This one, and the first in the series, Burns too Deep, are in a class by themselves. There is music in the words, and well there should be as the spirit of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, is an almost palpable presence. O’Quinn’s characters are dour policeman, Thomas Fitzgerald, an Irishman on Scottish soil, and Burns, an enigmatic antiquarian, historian and thief. They are opposites in nearly every respect, but when they first meet in Burns Too Hot, an instant attraction springs up between the two (as well as other things!). The Dundee Law picks up when they reunite after having been separated for a month. Burns and Thomas discover to their surprise that the intensity of feeling between them is stronger than ever. There is passionate sex, exquisite in its tastefulness and detail, which serves to further expose the characters of these two men. There is a mystery, too. A decomposing body found on Dundee Law (a hill of mainly volcanic soil that looms over the city) is found wrapped in shreds of a Dundee kilt. As a policeman, Thomas must find the murderer and solve the crime. As a man, he must find a way to keep his lover from ever leaving again. Burns is more than willing and eager to stay. But will he be able to? I hope we can look forward to more of their adventures on the road the the miles to Dundee (a traditional Irish Scottish song).
What can be so spectacular about a novella which brings back two of the most exciting characters to spill out of the wicked mind of Erin O'Quinn? Well, the bedroom scenes, for one, but more than that it's the way she manages to get Thomas Fitzgerald and "Bobbie"" Burns to epitomize her unique style All of her male couples in all of her books are distinct personalities of, and in keeping with, their completely unique personalities and the times in which they live.

How can it be so haunting? Well she turns a lucky investigative break for Irish-born Scottish policeman Thomas into what appears to be a quickly-solved puzzle by the man whom he cannot stay away from or keep from comparing to Robert Burns--even if he knows virtually nothing about that poet and national hero. But that puzzle is complicated by history, tradition, and violence which...well, no spoilers here!

I read this book on the plane coming back from a Caribbean vacation, and it took me only an hour or so. But that was yesterday. Today I am still haunted by the beauty of Ms. O'Quinn's words, the love songs Thomas and Burns wrap each other in (without speaking a word), and the feeling, hopefully, that these two will not go quietly into that starry night.

These men deserve all the love they can get, and I doubt if you will spare them any once you've smiled, and perhaps cried, your way though. Bravo!
