I sat down to Belinda S. Frisch’s Cure unsure of completely what to expect. While the idea of zombies have often been mixed with medical experiments or scientific experiments this was a new take on the subject. Zombies happened in a rural area and the event was contained. A doctor was able to get a sample of the disease and has been working on finding a cure as well as ways to beneficially use the virus since that happened. It’s been completely covered up so no one has a clue that’s happened.

That’s pretty much all happened prior to this novel and where we step into things.

In the novel we follow Dr. Nixon who has been giving access to the zombie virus. In his own private little world he is using the virus to experiment to find the cure for cancer. In his own little world though everything is done by his rules and his way. His rules are highly immoral and unorthodox as he is infecting the fetus’s of pregnant women (and impregnating these women in many cases) with the zombie virus to try to create a zombie stem cell that will solve the world’s largest disease.

So yes it’s that kind of twisted. As much though as you end up hating Dr. Nixon you are also going to hate his side kick Billy whose development was great. At least after the initial change where his character seemed like someone you’d almost feel sorry and root for to being a total scumbag right after. I didn’t feel that transition flowed well but when that is my only complaint about the entire novel (aside from having to wait for the sequel) that is not a bad one!

Inside the down of Strandville women of childbearing age are disappearing and a group of townsfolk who have lost their loved ones are gathering. They believe that the disappearances are related to the research hospital who has it’s own privatized security force and is completely on lock down.

Mix in a new security guard whose wife is there for an experimental cure for cancer, a pregnant woman who just signed up to be a security guard at the hospital, and her ex who is trying to track her down and the perfect combination of what you need for a page turner you can’t put down. Cure is a nonstop action filled and character driven book you are going to have no regrets reading.

While the human element is the greatest threat on all fronts don’t worry – zombies have their time to shine as well. While the moments are few and far between as the human horror is be far the greatest threat when the zombies do have their moments they shin in full undead force!

This is one of the most creative and unique zombie novels I’ve read in awhile and I can’t stress enough that you should be picking this one up immediately. You are all fortunate as the sequel is already out and while I haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet if it’s even half as good as this one you are not going to be let down. I’m also jealous that none of you had to wait for this one as I did.

I am huge into zombie genre, and there isn't much new/original that catches my interest. This book has an original plot and expertly-developed characters. I rarely pay for books, but I purchased book two right after I finished the first one.

This book has it all cures, infection, wasteland environments, a creepy hospital, people and medical professionals out for their own interests, and a medical scenario (in the name of a cure) that I haven't seen explored in other similar novels. The main character is hard not to identify with due to her issues with prior losses, and the *spoiler* missing girls and creepy small town theme are ones sure to raise the hair on your arms. Read this!
That was crazy--very descriptive with all the blood and feces...
Psycho doctor searching for a cure for cancer, inseminating women with the sperm of zombies...yep, that's exactly what is going on in this book. Dr. Nixon says his experiments are all about "saving people from needless death and suffering". He claims to be a healer looking for a cure, but he reminded me more of Dr. Heiter working on his "First Sequence" of his Human Centipede. He is sinister and heartless and extinguishes anyone that gets in his way.

On the last page, I kept clicking the next page button on my kindle app, thinking my laptop froze...nope, that was really how it ended. I recommend reading this one. I could really envision it all in my head. It would make a great movie.
Rating Four Zombie Heads

One of my criteria for a whether a book is good not is how often I complain to my wife that she's keeping me from finishing it with her questions or comments. Now, before you think I'm an insensitive man, she does the same thing to me when she's wrapped up in a good book, so it's a goose-and-gander thing. Having said that, the last third of this book was declared a `no interruption zone' and every time my wife had a question she was met with a "Shhh! Finishing this book." or a "I can't finish this book with you interrupting me." I read it through dinner and stayed at the table until I was done.

Frisch is adept at quickly developing sympathetic protagonists and merciless villains. There was some awkwardness, I felt, in the development of the character Billy - there seems to be some back story I missed because his personality took a turn I wasn't expecting, but without divulging any spoilers I get why it had to be this way. Other supporting characters are relentlessly human - they are in turns brave, flawed, cowardly, treacherous, devoted and heroic. In other words, they are like any people you or I might know, and that's part of what makes this novel so gripping.

Frisch writes with the pace of a runaway train. She sets the story in motion and it steadily picks up speed to the point where I didn't feel like I could read the pages fast enough. I actually had to force myself to slow down because I was skimming rather than reading. The zombies are fantastically horrible, the gore is gruesome and the smells she describes are palpable. Again, I won't divulge details, but I will tell you that after I read Cure, I am immensely glad to already have in my possession the sequel, "Afterbirth." I can, with no reservation, say that if you pick up this book you won't be disappointed.
