Siren Call A Rainshadow Novel Jayne Castle Books

The Rainshadow series is fantastic and this book is a very strong entry. Each Rainshadow book is a stand alone work, so no fear of cliffhangers or needing to have read previous books in order to understand what's going on.

I loved everything about this book and think it was perfect. The opening scene was brilliant and a memorable way to introduce the heroine. The hero and heroine, Rafe and Ella, were very likeable and strong characters. The romance and suspense components of this book were well balanced, and Rafe's and Ella's characterizations worked perfectly in both aspects.

The dialogue was wonderful, with amusing banter, mild sarcasm, and pithy comments. The story was fast paced and flowed very well. It was extremely engaging and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It just pulled me along and I couldn't turn the pages, well, the electronic ones, fast enough; I was very eager to see how the romance and the mystery unfolded. I know, I know; readers know there will be a happily ever after and that the bad guys will lose, but the journey to that conclusion was enthralling.

Each book in the series has a dust bunny companion, and this one had a lot of personality. Lorelei almost stole the show. Her love for her bridal veil and powdered doughnuts were sweet, and her initial meeting with Rafe was a very funny scene. It was obvious that she was checking him out as a potential mate for Ella.

There were a few well written sex scenes that weren't overly graphic but were sensual and romantic. I liked that the book focused on the story and not the sex, although the sex scenes were crucial in advancing the romance and paranormal connection between the hero and heroine.

One scene was poignant, when a predator died. The heroine's reflections on its death were thoughtful, acknowledging the necessity but at the same time seeing the tragedy. This scene added some depth and weight to an otherwise light romance, without dragging the story down and slowing the momentum; it was very skillfully written.

Any fans of Jayne Ann Krentz's books will likely fall in love with this one. She truly outdid herself. For anyone approaching her work for the first time, don't hesitate to try this book. It is usually always better to read a series in order, but someone who wants to start with this book shouldn't feel lost.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes Ms. Krentz's writing, as well as to anyone who likes or wants to try futuristic paranormal romances.

Siren Call A Rainshadow Novel Jayne Castle Books Reviews

I got this at midnight and was finished three hours later. It was totally worth it. I have come to love her Harmony books, and the Rainshadow series are a perfect extension of them.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Ella and Rafe both have secrets that they have to hide from society. While you don't really meet their families, you can tell that they love and support Ella and Rafe. If Ella and Rafe didn't have such great support systems, I think their talents would have consumed them.

I always love seeing a new dust bunny. It's always fun to see what personality this one has, and imagine how it will fit in with the others. Every dust bunny has a unique personality, with their own little quirk.

Overall, Siren's Call is a welcome addition to the Rainshadow series. Can't wait for the next one.
Should be 2 1/2

I have been reading JAK since I was 13 and it has to be said for the last five years, she has joined the ranks of Diana Palmer and Mary Higgens Clark as women who write the same book over and over again, especially her Jayne Castle series. Hero who is the scion of a powerful family, but still a dangerous lone wolf? Check. Heroine who is struggling to meet ends meet, but through her super unique power is going to get very, very rich through some newly discovered ruin? Check. Both main characters constantly decrying the existence of some new psychic power/kind of quartz despite new powers and new ruins popping up *all* the time? Check. Heroine fearing she is too powerfully psychic to love even though powerful psychics with strange abilities are also popping up all the time? Check And lastly, Hero who fears he is losing control of his powers only to be saved at the 11th hour by the complimentary power of the heroine? Check. I could be describing literally any book in this series, you say? Umm, no kidding.
So, on to the particulars I do like the world JAK has created here. I really love the dust bunnies and I am glad she introduced a new animal in this book because it was seeming like the world was only populated by dust bunnies and people. The new animal is actually amazingly cool if somewhat sinister. The book is a pleasant read, which is why I still buy JAK even though you could figure out every plot twist just by reading the back cover.
Speaking of, reading the synopsis, I got the feeling the hero disappeared after him and the heroine started dating. I didn't realize he disappeared after them meeting one time and him saying maybe, one day, they can go get coffee. It made her resentment of him for not following through go from understandable to mildly deranged. Also, I was really intrigued by the concept of a siren but really disappointed by the execution. She is a siren that can't sing? What is the point of that? Also, these psychic powers are supposed to extensions of themselves, but she doesn't seem connected to music at all except when she is using her gift. She doesn't even listen to music. It's just strange to me how disconnected she is to her power. She is a music talent that makes her living as a dream therapist? (Also, this is like the 7th book where JAK has brought up dream therapy/dream currents/dream powers without explaining what they are or how they work). She actually seems disconnected to everything tbh. If you were to ask me what her passions are, after reading the entire book, all I can come up with is a vague desire to have money and be sucessful. The hero is interesting enough, but other than attraction, I didn't get why they ended up together. Neither of them are really fleshed out enough to be individuals, so there you are.
Overall, if you want an easy beach read, I would recommend this as a light, mindless read that is enjoyable enough. Just don't think too deeply.
